Entitled, The Ballroom Spy, their joint exhibition is on at Heartbreak in London on Saturday 14th May and will run until Sunday 19th June, before transferring to the Royal West of England Academy, Bristol, where it will run from 2nd July to 31st August 2011.

Featuring twelve new paintings by Jack Vettriano and over forty photographs by Jeanette Jones, The Ballroom Spy showcases the glamorous and intoxicating world of professional ballroom dancing

Best in Show, Paula’s first solo exhibition in London, featured twenty new paintings and two new limited edition prints.

WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE….?

We invited the public to vote for their favourite dog on-line or in person at the gallery, the idea being that the winner of the ‘Best in Show’ rosette, will be published as a signed, limited edition print, with a percentage of the sales proceeds going to the Dogs’ Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity.  Voters were entered into a prize draw to win one of the signed, limited edition prints that we are to publish of the dog, voted to be the Best in Show. The voting resulted in a tie between ‘Tweety Pie‘ and ‘Cherry Blossom‘ who have been awarded the joint ‘Best in Show’ title and both images will be published as limited edition prints in October.

“My paintings have always been about those quiet moments, trying to catch the second where someone is lost in their own world.  Being given access to the Dunhill archive allowed me to see the history behind the company and the fact that their motivations hadn’t changed from the past, but had adapted to suit modern life. It is an ethos that I share; my work is not cutting edge nor is it traditional. I think I’m somewhere between the two.

 This work revolves around a series of paintings inspired from the Dunhill collections past and present. There are nods to explorers like Shackleton, which will be expanded into a larger collection of works in the future and there are also my signature pieces – the strong characters caught in a still moment, beautifully dressed.”

Coppoletta is considered to be one of the world’s leading tattoo artists and his parlour, The Family Business, in London’s Exmouth market has an international reputation for delivering unique and exquisite tattoos. A book,  Tattooed by The Family Business, was published in 2010 by Pavilion Books.

Beyond the world of tattooing, Coppoletta is in demand as a designer whose skills lend themselves to an increasingly diverse range of projects. He has collaborated with numerous musicians, artists and brands on artwork – his close collaborators just this year include the Prodigy, Damien Hirst, the Chapman Brothers and the luxury watch maker, Romain Jerome.

Heartbreak is delighted to be presented this, Coppoletta’s first exhibition of paintings and limited edition prints.

Drawn from Paterson’s interest in pulp fiction and the over-dramatic artworks associated with this literary genre, the imagery has been re-imagined using a pop art sensibility. The figures in Paterson’s paintings have have been taken from original photographs in 40′s and 50′s pulp detective magazines, they have then been transformed and reworked into the covers for imaginary pulp novels, with the artist as their fictional author.

A free signed copy of the book, ‘Jack  Vettriano: A Life‘, will be offered to all customers ordering a signed limited edition print during the exhibition.  Offer ends 31st March 2012.

Drawn from Paterson’s interest in pulp fiction and the over-dramatic artworks associated with this literary genre, the imagery has been re-imagined using a pop art sensibility. The figures in Paterson’s paintings have have been inspired by the original covers from ‘Love Fiction Monthly’, a monthly magazine published in the 1930′s and 1940′s. Paterson transforms and reworks them into the covers of his imaginary pulp novels, with the artist as their fictional author.

Although predominantly known for his dance paintings, Sibthorp has more recently dedicated himself to an on-going series of paintings that he refers to as his Quiet Space work

“The Quiet Space series is, for me, my most personal work. I have found reward over the years in producing artworks that just ‘are’. I attach no great meaning to them and I shy away from explaining them in any way. For me painting is a visual language so should not require rationalisation. I believe that artwork, especially my kind of work, should be self-explanatory as it is a visual language. If you have to explain it, you are failing to a certain extent. Everything should be conveyed in the painting. I would go along with Oscar Wilde, who once said, “A picture has no meaning but its beauty, no message but its joy”.

I am not out to rock the world with my insights but in some way I hope these paintings will touch the soul of someone, for a moment. If this is the case, I have achieved what I have set out to do.”

Heartbreak Gallery is delighted to be showing four new works by Fletcher Sibthorp as part of Love Is…, a mixed exhibition of paintings, drawings and sculpture inspired by themes of love and in support of the British Heart Foundation’s ‘Mending Broken Hearts’ campaign.

“In the midst of research I suddenly found the information around me was evolving into the art. There were times when I wished I could just create something purely for creativity alone, but the words had taken hold”.

Rixon works with hand-blown lead crystal spheres and bottles which she has made to order for her pieces, many of which are unique. She then fills the spheres or bottles with text pain-painstakingly cut from vintage copies of books and manuscripts.

Born in Turin, Italy, in 1970 where he lives and works now, Massimo Polello is Italy’s leading contemporary calligrapher.

Polello’s professional training began studying calligraphy at the Scriptorium de Toulouse in France, after which he worked on developing his own language and personal style of contemporary calligraphy. In the last two decades he has developed an international reputation for his calligraphy, running workshops and working with in different media. He has created several short films, including one with artist/film-maker Peter Greenaway, a video installation piece entitled ‘Peopling the Palace’, which was commissioned for the opening of the Venaria Castle, Turin in 2008.

Polello evolves the classic calligraphic techniques of which he is a master now, combining them with experimental artistic gestures, often embellished with embellishing them with mixed media and innovative materials such as resins and varnishes. He has moved beyond the strict confines of working on paper or canvas and is always looking for unusual and inspiring surfaces and materials with which to work and from which to create his unique pieces

He sums up his own approach to calligraphy as, “…letters become a means to exist outside myself… going beyond the letters, captured by a sole need to see. They become signs, images, evocations, urgent needs, emotions.”

For our ‘Love Is…’ exhibition, Polello has created this beautiful piece entitled ‘Blue Heart Split’; a diptych piece in mixed media on hand-made paper.
